BACKGROUND
I was born and raised in a town just outside Edinburgh in Scotland. I came
to
Canada in 1963 and, until my retirement, worked in the communications industry.
My chosen path resulted in a somewhat nomadic life but gave me an
opportunity to visit a wide range exotic destinations in Europe, Africa and
Asia.
All my life, I have had
an interest in both technical and artistic drawing but,
apart from a few doodles, did little about it until the 1990's. I tried my
hand in
a more serious way to coloured pencil and watercolour work. Then, two things
happened. Firstly, I married Norma, an enthusiastic watercolourist, and shortly
afterwards retired. The time was obviously ripe for a more (but not too) serious
foray into art.
PREFERRED MEDIA
Coloured pencil, pen & ink and watercolour seem natural media for
me, but I am also giving oils a try.
PREFERRED SUBJECTS
Architectural subjects are perhaps my main area but I also enjoy birds and
flowers. My approach tends to be photo-realistic.
ARTISTIC INFLUENCES
A vivid childhood memory is of my father, a draughtsman by training, painstakingly
working on a pen & ink drawing of Canterbury Cathedral. My Uncle Frank
was
an architect and he did wonderful renderings of his designs in pen & ing
with
watercolour wash. Canaletto has always been a favourite of mine in the
formal art world with his marvellously detained paintings of Venice.
